December 12, 2021 by June Boylan Leave a Comment

Hockey Hall of Fame defenceman Sergei Zubov has been named head coach of Team Russia for the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship.

The Russian Hockey Federation announced Tuesday that Oleg Bratash, who was named head coach of the team in October, will now serve as the team’s senior coach.

Zubov was serving as head coach of Dinamo Riga this season, but parted ways with the team in October just 20 games into his tenure. He previously spent two seasons as head coach of Sochi HC in the KHL from 2017-19.

“I am ready to work in this role at the World Junior Championship,” Zubov said Tuesday. “I think that our coaching staff has enough knowledge and experience to work at such a large tournament. We have a talented team and we’re preparing for the competition.”

The 51-year-old spent 16 seasons in the NHL during his playing career, including 12 with the Dallas Stars. He won the Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers in 1994 and again with the Stars in 1999. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2019.

Russia also named their preliminary roster for the world juniors Tuesday, headlined by Nashville Predators prospect Fedor Svechkov, the lone Russian selected in the first round of the 2021 NHL Draft. Fellow Predators prospect goaltender Yaroslav Askarov, selected in the first round of the 2020 draft, was also named to the roster and appears set to play in the world juniors for the third straight year.

Finland announces roster for 2022 World Juniors Championship Schedule

December 11, 2021 by June Boylan Leave a Comment

The 2022 World Juniors Championship is just around the corner and on Wednesday, two teams announced their tournament rosters. The San Jose Sharks will have at least one prospect in the tournament, as William Eklund made the final cut for Sweden, but Finland’s roster skews more toward 2022 draft-eligible prospects, with 10 total players showcasing themselves for next summer.

Finland World Juniors

Among those draft-hopefuls are forwards Joakim Kemell and Brad Lambert. The 17-year-olds are both ranked largely in the top-10, and as high as second-overall so far in the scouting season. Lambert comes from a hockey family, with his dad and uncle having played in Europe, as well as his uncle Lane Lambert, who played for the Detroit Red Wings and Quebec Nordiques in the 80s.

Lambert comes with more of the size and versatility, playing at center and wing, while winger Kemell is a pure goal-scorer. The JYP team mates in Finland’s Liiga are two of the three youngest players on the team. Kemell leads the team in both goals (12) and points (18) despite missing nine games.

World Juniors 2022 : Raiders captain Guhle named to Canadian WJC camp roster

December 6, 2021 by June Boylan Leave a Comment

Kaiden Guhle approached last year with Team Canada at the World Junior Championship. His additional opportunity at a gold decoration is soon to start.

The veteran defenseman was one of three returning players in the fundamental program for Team Canada that was reported Wednesday. He is the just defenseman from last year’s silver decoration winning crew that was qualified to return.

WJC

As it generally does, the competition will formally start on Boxing Day, yet the work starts before that as the group’s instructional course will begin on Dec. 8. They will hold two practices before they face the U Sports top pick group on Dec. 11 and 12 as a feature of their customary pre-competition plan. From that point forward, the arrangement is that they’ll formally have their full group.

While Canada will not have the sort of extraordinary quarantine they had finally year’s occasion, there is as yet a concise quarantine period in Edmonton after that. When they escape that quarantine it will be a little more than seven days until the competition starts, and not exactly that until their first pre-competition game.

As well as getting back to wearing the maple leaf, something Guhle’s done at the WJC, Hlinka-Gretzky Cup and World Under-17 Challenge, it will be a get back for him. In contrast to last year, when the competition was shut to fans, Guhle will play simply up the street from his old neighborhood of Sherwood Park in a structure loaded with onlookers.

Guhle was important for a stacked Canadian blueline last year that included six NHL first-round picks. He completed second in scoring among defensemen in the group with two objectives and a help, following just group co-chief Bowen Byram in blueline scoring. Byram was a commander as a returning player last year, and there is a brilliant possibility Guhle will have a similar obligation.

In the wake of missing the beginning of the period since he was away with the Montreal Canadiens, Guhle has gotten back to the Raiders and set up two objectives and 15 focuses in 17 games, all while playing his standard tough style. He scored his initial two objectives of the period against the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday, November 27 giving all the offense in a 2-1 Raiders win.

The remainder of the Team Canada choice camp list incorporates 14 first-round picks from past NHL drafts, 15 individual individuals from the WHL, and three players who have not yet been drafted.

Canada opens the competition against the Czech Republic on Boxing Day at 6:00 p.m. Saskatchewan time.
